Today’s NASA image comes from an area on Mars with craters that “contain curious deposits with mysterious shapes and distribution.” Or so they claim! I personally have a feeling they simply took a photo of a little-known Pink Floyd album cover from the 1970s. It was, I believe, the follow-up to Meddle. Need proof? Simply compare the following image to the one above:

See the similarity? It’s a conspiracy I tell you! Fool me once with pictures of sausage, I won’t be fooled again!

But seriously folks…

Can we stop for a moment to simply take in the fact that we (human beings that is) now get high-resolution images from Mars – the planet Mars! – on a regular basis now. How cool is that? Just a few decades ago that would have been considered crazy science fiction stuff. Now it is so commonplace that we (human beings with way too much time on our hands that is) can come up with crazy conspiracy theories about how it’s not real. Humans are simultaneously brilliant and stupid at the same time. Anyway, if you have the time check out the images coming back from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter because it is amazing stuff.

HIRISE Spots Martian Crater Deposits

This image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft’s HIRISE instrument on Oct. 23, 2022, of the northern plains of Arabia Terra shows craters that contain curious deposits with mysterious shapes and distribution. For instance, the deposits are located on the south sides of the craters, but not usually in the north, and are found only in craters larger than 600 meters in diameter. Scientists suspect that these features formed by sublimation of ice-rich material.
