BREAKING NEWS: Sauron, the lord of darkness – also known as the Necromancer – long thought dead has reappeared over Antarctica. Using his go-to guise of a large disembodied eye, Sauron has been seen gathering followers from the surrounding area. As the area is frozen, desolate tundra the followers have been limited so far to a handful of scientists and a half-dozen penguins. Not deterred however Sauron has stated he has big plans. Sources say that after a millennia of reforming a corporeal presence the master of deception plans to “take it slow” and bide his time till he is at full evil power.

The return of the malevolent spirit is seen as a major blow to all free-folk. After the destruction of the One Ring of Power at the hands of an unlikely hero the spirit of Sauron dissipated and was scattered. Unable to reform a physical appearance it was assumed at the time that he had become a harmless entity and, although unconfirmed, was thought to have passed into the Void.

A certain wizard who was a witness and was on hand at the time of the ring’s destruction was quoted as saying. “If it is destroyed, then he will fall, and his fall will be so low that none can foresee his arising ever again. For he will lose the best part of the strength that was native to him in his beginning, and all that was made or begun with that power will crumble, and he will be maimed for ever, becoming a mere spirit of malice that gnaws itself in the shadows, but cannot again grow or take shape. And so a great evil of this world will be removed.”

With the return of the evil eye this particular interpretation is being reported as false with some networks going so far as to call it “fake news.”

With the reemergence of the eye and the shadow of evil no doubt ready to descend over the entire world a global call has gone out to any remaining hobbits to come forward. As this is unlikely one can only assume we are all doomed.

One ray of hope however is the fact that with the subjugation of all human life under the banner of the dark shadow it is seen by many, in light of the election of Donald Trump, a step up.

The story above is of course not true. The image is not – alas – the return of the Eye of Sauron. All questing will be canceled.

What it is however is a phenomenon called parhelion (also called a sun dog which is much cooler). It was taken by photojournalist Christopher Michel on a trip to Antarctica. It happens when it is so cold that ice crystals are suspended in the air. The crystals float horizontally and are hexagonal in shape and so refract the light giving the impression of a giant disembodied eye floating in the sky. Cool right? I hate the cold so I personally will never see this…but still cool.
