My Favorite Horror Podcasts (Informative)

There are many (many, many, many) podcasts about horror out there for your listening enjoyment. They fall into basically two categories – informative and dramatic. Dramatic podcasts are, well dramatic. They dramatize stories. Pretty straightforward. Informative podcasts on the other hand tell you about the stories. This can be done in a documentary-style, reviews and critique, or just a simple chat. Sometimes a combination of all three. And of the plethora of choices available below is a small list of the ones I listen to on a regular basis. (Later in the week I will share some dramatic ones as well.)

Evolution of Horror

Hosted by Mike Muncer, The Evolution of Horror explores the history of the horror genre, from silent cinema to modern classics, via different subgenres. Each season works chronologically through different subgenres or themes (Slashers, Ghosts, Zombies, etc.) and in each episode, Mike is joined by a different guest from the world of horror to discuss a particular horror movie and its place in horror history.

This is both an informative podcast and a friendly chat about films. This is one of those “can’t wait for the next episode” kind of podcast. Highly recommended.

Random Number Generator Horror Podcast Number 9

One of the best premises for a podcast…ever. Hosted by Jeffrey Cranor and Cecil Baldwin of Welcome to Night Vale, Random Number Generator Horror Podcast No. 9 takes on horror films, one at a time, in a random order.

At the end of each episode, the hosts roll two dice to determine the next film to watch. One is the Scare Die, which will determine what kind of monster the next film should contain (e.g. Vampire, Home Invader, Cult, Werewolf, etc). The other is the Style Die, which will assign the next film’s style or origin (e.g. Black & White, Camp, John Carpenter film, Found Footage, etc).

Brain Rot

Just a goofy fun podcast. Hosted by Stevie Webb, Brain Rot dives deep(ish) into 1980s and 90s horror. all the “so bad its good” variety and the genuinely great variety. But to be honest it’s mostly the bad. Stevie’s genuine affection for these films shines through and is what really makes this podcast fun to listen to. Also, he has a rotating door of experts and celebrities to chat with that is really quite impressive.

Faculty of Horror

Academics talk about a genre I love…does not get better than that. Hosts Andrea Subissati and Alexandra West talk about horror with a love of the genre and a healthy dose of research and critical analysis thrown in for good measure. Just a heck of a lot of fun to listen to and you might actually learn something as well. Also, lots of profanity.

Lore

One of the granddaddy of podcasts in general. Not so much a horror podcast, but an exploration of creepy folklore and dark history. Host Aaron Mahnke’s soft, almost hypnotic voice guides you though stories of the macabre with a “we’re all sitting round the campfire” vibe.

Lore is award-winning, critically acclaimed, and consistently on people’s top podcast lists. And for good reason, it’s great stories beautifully told.

This is not an exhaustive list obviously, just a small sample. Please share your thoughts on my choices, or if there are any others you’d like to share leave them in the comments below.
